Lusaka Waste Management Project (LWMP)

The Danish Donor Agency DANIDA supports the Lusaka Waste Management Project (LWMP). The project is divided into a Phase A (2000-2003) and a Phase B (2004-2006 with possible extension to 2007).

The overall objective of the project is to establish sustainable solid waste management in Lusaka City and also to provide services to the poor and provide replicable models for Urban Solid Waste and Sanitation Management.

The essence of Phase B is to assist the WMU in the implementation of the Strategic Municipal Solid Waste Management Plan for Lusaka City through technical and financial assistance.

Technical Assistance

Institution building and strengthening, capacity development
Financial training, training in accountancy
Transfer of knowledge related to waste management especially waste collection and disposal but also recycling and prevention
Assistance in planning including elaboration of five year rolling action plans and annual operation plans

Financial Assistance - K 20 billion from DANIDA over three years for:

technical assistance
waste collection equipment
landfill equipment
vehicles for waste inspectors
computers and other office equipment
clean-up activities
improving the dumpsite
working capital
training, public awareness and workshops

Some of the coming activities

Expansion of waste collection services to all Peri-Urban and non Peri-Urban areas
Improving Chunga with office, more monitoring, extra equipment
Franchise contracts for more (all but one) WMDs
Procurement of equipment
Training of WMU staff and others
Design of new landfill

Finally at the end of phase B:

Everyone in Lusaka shall have access to waste collection services against an affordable fee
The City of Lusaka shall be free of accumulated waste
Waste shall be disposed of in an environmentally sound manner either at the new Environmentally sound, Engineered Larger Chunga Site.
The Lusaka Waste Management Project shall be an example for other Urban Centres in Zambia
