Waste Disposal

The Lusaka City has only one legal disposal site: The Chunga Landfill. The Chunga Landfill is managed by the WMU and is situated off the Great North Road along the road to Chingwere Cemetery about 800 meters off the turn off.

The Waste Management Unit has started with the upgrade of the Chunga disposal site to an engineered landfill in order to improve the protection of the environment. The plans include the construction of a disposal area with a plastic bottom liner to prevent that polluted water from the waste can penetrate into the soil and pollute the groundwater.

For the construction of the new landfill a contract has been signed between the Lusaka City Council and the Contract Raubex Construction Zambia Ltd in joint venture with Raubex Construction PTY LTD of South Africa. Supervision of the construction works is done by RambØll a consultancy firm from Denmark and Civilstruts Consulting Engineers from Lusaka. The landfill construction is funded by the Danish International Development Assistance, DANIDA.

The new landfill will include a lined disposal area, two weighbridges, offices for landfill staff and a small workshop annex parking for landfill equipment. The entire landfill will be fenced off to prevent unauthorised access.
